Slow Summer Morning
A journal entry on tired mornings, breakfast, books and taking the day off properly.
I woke up twice that morning.
The second time, it was around 11 a.m.
I’d already decided that the day was going to be slow. No rushing. No trying to fit work into every spare hour. But I kept thinking about it anyway. Nine books are coming out in October, and even though they’re all written, there is still so much left to do before they are ready.
I didn’t feel particularly well either. My back hurt, I was tired and my stomach felt a little funny. So eventually I stopped arguing with myself and decided that I wasn’t working. I made the bed, folded some laundry and made oats with banana, berries and far too much honey.
After breakfast, I spent some time in the library.
I’m still building it, but I already love being in there. Sometimes I open a book at a random page and find something I had forgotten. A favourite passage. A sentence that makes me laugh. Something I want to read again.
Later, I tried on a new dress I had bought for the park. It was far too long. So I cut it. That felt about right for the day.
Nothing particularly exciting. Nothing extraordinary. Just breakfast, books, a badly bought dress and finally going outside.
Sometimes taking the day off properly is enough.
