Slow Summer Evening
A journal entry on cooking, flowers and making an ordinary evening feel like an occasion.
There was nothing elaborate planned for this evening.
I wanted to use some of the vegetables in the freezer, so I mixed them with a ripe banana, a little flour and whatever spices felt right. It was one of those recipes that began with wondering what on earth I could make and ended with something I’ll certainly make again.
While the vegetable bake was in the air fryer, I refreshed the flowers. I took them out of their vase, changed the water and spent a little time looking at the centres of the blooms. Some flowers are so perfectly made that they almost look artificial.
Later, I set the table and sat down to eat.
Eating alone can sometimes make the smallest effort feel unnecessary. It’s easy to balance a plate on your lap and turn on the television. There is nothing wrong with that. But I also think there’s something lovely about setting a place for yourself, adding flowers and treating an ordinary meal as though it matters.
Because it does.
Perhaps self-care isn’t always about doing something special. Sometimes it’s simply choosing to be present for your life. Making dinner. Lighting a candle. Sitting at the table instead of rushing through the moment.
Nothing extravagant. Just an evening at home, made into an occasion because I was there to enjoy it.
